Description:  The Project 39 group ran a fantrip to benefit their restoration og LIRR 4-6-0 39, selecting a June Saturday for the trip. It poured, all day. No one will be getting off to see the 39 at Riverhead. The train has arrived, and will walt to meet the westbound scoot from Greenport, then roll on to the end of the line itself.

Switching
Title:  Switching
Description:  RF 62 often did extensive switching at Riverhead where there were several sidings and an active team track. Here the power backs down to a hitch with a boxcar as the rest of the train sits on the main. This train did not have radios for the crews, and all moves were coordinated by hand signals.

Not management
Title:  Not management
Description:  Riders on the LIRR often complained about the way the railroad was run, especially when things went wrong. Most were unaware of the logistics of keeping an operation that ran over 700 trains every day going. They referred to the people running tha railroad in many ways, sometimes even as turkeys. Here we see the real thing, caught while I was waiting for RF 63 near Riverhead.

LIRR MU baggage/RPO
Title:  LIRR MU baggage/RPO
Description:  The group that was restoring LIRR 39 in Riverhead had also started to acquire some rolling stock. Among other items was this MP54 baggage/RPO. These were used for storage mail and newspapers, although this one appears to have a working RPO apartment. I can recall seeing sacks of mail being tossed off the train in Manhasset when visiting my grandparents back in the 60s.

Double decker
Title:  Double decker
Description:  Among the cars held for the LIRR museum is a double decker, a car that was unique to the LIRR. They went into service in the 1930s, with the last ones being retired in 1972. Most were set up as MU cabs, with motorman controls. This one has been repainted into as delivered scheme.

Sign of days gone by
Title:  Sign of days gone by
Description:  The building behind RF 63 is the Long Island Potato Exchange, once a huge deal on the Island. As late as the 1950s, solid trains of potatoes would be sent west from Riverhead. Better roads and higher real estate values meant fewer potatoes, and most of them now go by truck. Imagine three or four C 420s and 90 cars of potatoes-what a sight!!

Working the team track
Title:  Working the team track
Description:  Once a common sight in many towns, the team track had become a rare feature. Riverhead still had one(as did Queens Village, though I dont recall seeing any cars spotted there in the 80s), here being switched by RF 62s C 420s. The crews on this train did not get radios, so hand signals were the standard way for the trainmen to communicate. It was a real lesson in old style railroading.

Potatoes!!
Title:  Potatoes!!
Description:  RF 63 gets ready to go west as it sits in front of what was once one of LIRRs prime traffic sources-the Suffolk Potato Exchange. The LIRR at the end of WW II would ship 110 car produce blocks from Suffolk County, one of Americas main potato producers. Now it all goes by truck, whats left of it.
